Cervical spondylosis is the most common disorder affecting the cervical spine. It is a degenerative condition of spine found invariably in persons over 50 years of age, men are affected earlier than women and is often associated with people pursuing white collar jobs. ?Spondylo? is a Greek word-meaning vertebra. ?Spondylosis? is a general term which means degenerative disease affecting the vertebra, disc and surrounding ligaments.
Repetitive strain injury due to sedentary lifestyle without proper ergonomic care (as while working in front of computers, driving, traveling etc) and age related degeneration are common causes leading to cervical spondylosis.
Signs of?Cervical Spondylosis
Symptom Presentation
The patient complaints of discomfort in moving head toward shoulder and rotating head. Neck and shoulder pain are the most common presentation of cervical spondylosis. The symptoms of cervical spondylosis are pain and stiffness of neck along with radiating pain and giddiness. Symptoms often develop slowly but they may start or get worse suddenly. The intensity of pain ranges from being mild to severe, restricting movements. The symptoms undergo spontaneous remissions and exacerbations.
Pain and Stiffness
Neck stiffness, pain and headache are the common symptoms. Pain is initially intermittent but later becomes persistent. Pain radiating to shoulder or downwards on the outer aspect of forearm and hand is often observed. It may get worse when the neck is bent backwards, after prolonged standing or sitting, while sneezing, coughing, laughing and at night.
Night pain can be due to improper sleeping habits. This radiating pain might present itself as stabbing or a burning pain or it can be just a dull ache. Neck stiffness and pain results in limitation of movements that gets worse over time. Headache is felt at the back of the head.
Sensory Issues
Parasthesias may present as a syndrome called ?numb, clumsy hands?. Numbness is observed in the shoulders, arms, or (rarely) legs. Patient complaints of tingling and or decreased sensation and has difficulty in fine motor activities like writing, opening car using keys etc.
Muscle Weakness
Although uncommon, certain patients develop muscle weakness which goes unnoticed until the doctor examines the patient on complaints of inability to lift arm, squeeze tightly with hands etc. Weakness can be unilateral or bilateral.
