Case Interview Question #00515: The Viessmann Group is an international heating systems manufacturer headquartered in Allendorf (Eder), Germany. The company controls 23 production and project management divisions in 11 countries around the world. As of 2011 the company employs 9,600 people and reports annual sales of ?1.86 billion. Viessmann Group provides an extensive range of HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) products, including combined heat and power generation (CHP), heat pumps, sU.olar thermal systems, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment, etc.

You?ve been approached by the boiler division of Viessmann Group and they want you to help them devise a growth strategy. Their main goal is to increase sales and preferably profits too. How would you go about the case? What recommendations would you give to the boiler division?

Possible Answer:

Candidate: So the client is the boiler division of a large company and wants us to help develop a growth strategy to increase its sales and profits. Are there any other goals I should be aware of?

Interviewer: No, that would be all.

Candidate: Before we take a look at the company specific information, I would like to know more about the industry ? current trends, any new technological advances, nature of competition etc.

Interviewer: Boiler companies typically have a line of products based on capacity and fuel used. There are no new advances in recent times. 80% of the market is organized and the main customers are the thermal power plants.

Candidate: Hmmm. A company can grow either by expanding market share in its existing market, entering new geographical markets, coming out with new products or by acquiring another company. I would like to know more about the client company. Can you please tell me:

• What this company?s products are
• Who are its customers are
• Where does it operate
• Its access to cash/financing resources
• Its competitors

Interviewer: It?s a medium size firm ? about Euro ?200 Million in annual sales, operates primarily in Germany. It?s the biggest player in the organized segment which is approximately 80% of total market. Its main customers are thermal power plants, etc. Products can be classified on the basis of capacity and fuel for the boilers. It doesn?t have much cash or technology. It?s a midget compared to global players in the same industry.

Candidate: Well, not being cash-rich restricts the firm from exploring various growth options. For instance, new product development seems to be out of question given no access to technology advances.

Similarly, exploring new geographical markets, even overseas markets, would be out of reach presently as there is dearth of capital. Acquiring another company is a possibility if synergies exist that can to offer significant benefits out of the merged entity. But, we also must keep in mind the results realization lag in case of a merger. Again, M&A activity presently does not seem feasible.

Interviewer: Sounds reasonable.

Candidate: Now that we have eliminated some of the options, I would like to focus on current market and consolidation of the existing product line. Specifically, I would like to know the individual products on offer, margins to be made on each of them and their individual growth potential.

Interviewer: It is a fair point. Our client presently offers boilers based on its capacity and fuel type. Typically, they get a maintenance contract for a specified time period as well. As far as the growth potential is concerned, there are quite a few captive power plants being developed currently in Germany. Additionally, there are a couple of really big power plants announced by our big customers. Margins are negotiable and depend to a great extent on the customer in question.

Candidate: I see. Given these facts, I would look at the mix of products on offer. To that effect, I would like to know the share of each of the individual product type in the sales. Post that, I would like to map each product with its growth potential, its current market share in its category and the margins to be retained.

Interviewer: I think you have figured it out. What would you like to suggest to the client company?

Candidate: In my opinion, our client should focus on the products which promise growth and also offer higher margins. Possibly, they are currently providing a standard capacity type or a fuel type to most of the customers. They should rather look at the individual customer needs and design their offer accordingly. This benefit to customer would also enable them to command a greater margin on each product sold. Sales force incentives could also be aligned with customer-centricity in terms of correct product requirement assessment and supply. In short, focusing on the right product is the key for growth for our client.

Interviewer: Great. I think the analysis is sufficiently thorough. We can stop here. Thank you.

Candidate?s Notes: I also talked about cyclic goods, i.e. boilers and other such heavy industrial goods are highly cyclic in nature, meaning that if GDP grows by an ?x? percent, the sales of these goods would go up by 5x percent, and if GDP goes down by x%, their sales would also go down by 5x%. The interviewer agreed but reminded me that there?s a lag in between GDP growth and growth of heavy industries.

Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe Talk 'Big Easy Express' Documentary

'It's like the biggest party you've ever been to,' Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor says of the film, which captures the 2011 Railroad Revival Tour.

Last year, Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show joined forces for the Railroad Revival Tour, a trek that took them through the American Southwest on a journey that was nearly as long as the names of the band names involved.

Director Emmett Malloy rode along with them, capturing each show and every magical moment aboard the rails ... and now, he's brought it all together in a brand-new documentary, "Big Easy Express," which premiered during the South by Southwest Music Fest in Austin, Texas. And at the premiere, MTV News caught up with three of the stars — Mumford's Ben Lovett, Edward Sharpe and Old Crow's Ketch Secor — to talk about making the film, which, from the sound of things, wasn't really much work at all.

"We weren't trying to make some 'great film' or anything. It didn't feel like that, we were just enjoying this experience that was laid out, and doing gigs and traveling in a bizarre way between the two," Lovett said. "And the great thing about Emmett, and this documentary, was that it didn't invade any of that, it didn't feel forced or staged. So, no, we weren't scrubbing up on our documentary history beforehand."

"It was like the biggest party you've ever been to," Secor laughed. "It lasted for a week, and you just couldn't afford to throw another one afterwards."

Though you get the feeling everyone involved would've liked to try, because just hearing the three reminisce on the tour, you can tell that it was one they'll remember for a long time. Not just for the musical moments, but for everything that happened between the shows too.

"It was about the joy of music, the joy of camaraderie," Secor said. "We're each, individually, quite different bands, we don't play the same music, we come from different places — England, Los Angeles, Nashville — but we all came together and just played ... played our hearts out. It was really amazing."

"It came at quite an interesting time, we've all gone on to be making records pretty soon after the tour," Lovett said. "So, I think it's impossible to deny the influence both of the spirit and the music that we had on that trip ... something happened."

And to that end, even though there's still no theatrical premiere for "Big Easy Express" (a publicist told MTV News it'll hit theaters nationally later this year), all three bands are beginning to make plans for a sequel ... to the tour, at least.

"I think twinkling in the back of everyone's mind is maybe doing something again," Sharpe said. "We've talked about weird ways to top that or have a different experience ... a zeppelin or a riverboat ... I think a zeppelin's more realistic."

Angry Birds in US retail, UK parks push

LONDON (Reuters) - Angry Birds maker Rovio is teaming up with a major U.S. retail chain to sell its merchandise, and plans to open themed activity parks in Britain, as it continues to expand beyond mobile games to establish a Disney-style brand, it said on Tuesday.

Peter Vesterbacka, marketing chief of the Finnish start-up behind the world's most downloaded game, told Reuters that Rovio saw itself as an entertainment brand, not just a games company.

"We want to make Angry Birds a permanent part of pop culture," Peter Vesterbacka said in an interview in London, comparing the brand to Sanrio's Hello Kitty or Nintendo's Mario. "We're just getting started."

Angry Birds, in which the player uses a slingshot to catapult birds to destroy green pigs hidden in fortresses, has been downloaded more than 700 million times, and is the fastest-growing game on Facebook.

Rovio raised its profile hugely last year by hitching a game to the hit animated movie Rio, made by News Corp's 20th Century Fox, even burying a clue to the game in the movie studio's Super Bowl ad.

The company's value has been estimated in recent media reports at up to $9 billion, little more than two years after it first released Angry Birds for the iPhone.

"It's as good a guess as any," said Vesterbacka, comparing Rovio to Facebook games maker Zynga, which went public in December and has a market value of $9.6 billion.

Now Rovio has signed up a top U.S. retailer to put its branded toys, books and T-shirts in dedicated areas of thousands of stores nationwide, timed to coincide with the launch of its new Angry Birds Space game this week.

The company also plans to open branded retail stores in China soon.

Rovio did not want to name the U.S. retailer ahead of the official announcement but said it would be bigger than an existing partnership with bookseller Barnes & Noble, where visitors to the stores can pick up game credits for free.

Rovio also said it planned to launch themed activity parks in Britain, which was its original breakthrough market for the Angry Birds game, as its first expansion outside Finland. Its next targets will be in Asia.

The parks, which will be built in partnership with Finnish playground equipment maker Lappset, will feature Angry Birds-inspired swings, sandpits, climbing towers, slides and outdoor arcade games.

More like adventure playgrounds than Disney's massive theme parks, they will mostly be in cities and towns or attached to existing large theme parks.

"We can't afford to invest billions into theme parks," said Vesterbacka. "We are a tiny company from a tiny country."

Rovio has about 300 staff, up from 50 a year ago, and has had to move out of central Helsinki to new, bigger headquarters next to mobile phone maker Nokia.

Vesterbacka reiterated that Rovio was in no hurry for a public listing. Its last funding round was last year, when it raised $42 million from venture capital firms Accel, Atomico and Felicis Ventures.

He said Rovio had not needed the money and had raised the capital primarily to attract onto its board investors such as Atomico's founder Niklas Zennstrom, a co-founder of Skype.

"This year we'll be very busy, like we were last year, with building up the infrastructure," said Vesterbacka. "We can fund our own growth."

Species 'rafted' to Madagascar, some believe

The mysteriously rich diversity of life on the isle of Madagascar might have arrived there in part on "floating islands" carried by ocean currents, researchers now say.

Madagascar, the world's fourth-largest island, is the sole home to a wide variety of animal species, most of which are thought to have reached Madagascar after plate tectonics separated it from Africa and other continents.

"The island has been fully isolated for more than 80 million years, which is well before the time period most of its animals are thought to have evolved, meaning many groups could not have been stranded there before the continents broke apart," said researcher Karen Samonds, a paleontologist at the University of Queensland in Australia.

How some of the island's more land-bound creatures arrived there is an enigma, given how Africa, the closest landmass to Madagascar, is now about 250 miles (400 kilometers) away. To figure out how the ancestors of Madagascar's animals reached the island, researchers sought to decipher the patterns of arrival of the more than 80 groups of species that exist there.

Floating islands
To start, the investigators compiled a database detailing relationships between animals on Madagascar with their nearest living and extinct relatives outside the island. The similarities and differences seen on a genetic and anatomical level between the Madagascar animals and their kin helped the scientists estimate when they must have separated and arrived on the island.

After thus seeing when these animals might have reached Madagascar and from where, the researchers then determined what the geography and ocean characteristics were like at the time and looked at how the creatures might have reached the island ? by swimming, flying or rafting.

"Rafting has long been hinted at as the explanation for much of Madagascar's fauna," Samonds told OurAmazingPlanet. "Those in favor of the rafting theory point out that there are some tantalizing historic sightings of animals on floating clumps of vegetation, usually produced after major storm events. These 'floating islands,' up to 100 meters (330 feet) across, have been reported at sea more than 200 kilometers (125 miles) from their places of origination, some housing large, food-bearing trees and pockets of freshwater, as well as large terrestrial mammals, including a jaguar, puma, deer, monkeys and even a human infant."

But not all scientists have been convinced by this theory.

"There has been a great debate about rafting over at least the past 50 years," Samonds said. "While many authors have argued that dispersal events by terrestrial, land-dwelling animals across great distances of water are virtually impossible, others have argued that even unlikely events are certain to occur if the time elapsed is long enough, and that prevailing ocean currents could have aided these journeys."

"When you consider the very long time-frame we're talking about ? tens of millions of years ? even rare events have a chance to occur and be successful. In fact, for most groups, only one rare event explains the presence of the modern forms ? for example, DNA evidence indicates that just one primate species made it across, probably 40 or 50 million years ago, and that ancestral form gave rise to the 101 descendent species you can find in Madagascar today."

Rafting rates
After Madagascar separated from the continents more than 80 million years ago, more animals came to the island from Africa than Asia, as expected, given how much closer the former remained to Madagascar than the latter. In addition, after the divide from the continents, animals that could fly or swim arrived at Madagascar at more than three times the rates seen with creatures that could not, as expected, given how the ocean would serve as an insurmountable barrier for land dwellers.

Ancient changes in ocean current patterns also suggest that rafting was key to introducing land-dwelling animals to Madagascar. The scientists noted that until 15 million to 20 million years ago, ocean currents between Madagascar and Africa flowed largely eastward, making it easier for rafters to reach the island from the continent. However, through slow tectonic drift, Madagascar's northern tip started impinging on the southern equatorial ocean current, triggering a reversal in how the ocean currents flowed and making it harder for rafters from Africa to reach Madagascar. During that period, arrival rates of terrestrial animals to Madagascar began dropping significantly, researchers found.

"Our results strongly suggest rafting did happen, mainly because the probability of successfully rafting changes predictably according to prevailing conditions," Samonds said. "There's no reason to believe it has stopped ? it is conceivable that rafting events on floating masses of vegetation detached by large tropical storms may still occur to Madagascar, especially through severe cyclones, some of which pass between Africa and Madagascar within a matter of days."

Samonds and her colleagues detailed their findings online Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
