Developer makes $120,000 donation to B.C. Cancer Foundation

The developers of the largest construction project in Sooke history made a $120,000 donation to cancer research on Saturday.

Mike Barrie and his partners used a portion of initial sales at their $300-million Mariner's Village project to donate $120,000 to the B.C. Cancer Agency's Vancouver Island Centre.

Barrie said he wanted to ensure the mixed-use development would have a positive impact in the region.

The initial cluster of 33 condos and 16 townhomes, known as Navigator's Point, are completed, with residents already moving into units on the first three floors of the four-storey condo building.

Sales from those units allowed Barry, a former professional hockey player, and his partners to make the donation. Barrie toured the Vancouver Island centre last year and was impressed with the work.

"I had no idea that this level of research was happening here on Vancouver Island, and that so many breakthroughs have had a direct impact on cancer treatment for patients," he said. "It was completely unexpected and exciting."

B.C. Cancer Agency president and CEO Douglas Nelson thanked the group for the donation.

"Mike Barrie and his Mariner's Village partners have made a significant contribution to research and the future improvement of cancer treatment and outcomes for patients here on Vancouver Island," he said. "They are true philanthropic leaders."

More donations are expected as the rest of the units are sold, Barrie said. When complete, the development will consist of 110,000 square feet of commercial space, 30,000 square feet of offices and 370 condos and townhouses.

Barrie is a majority owner of Mariner's Village with Fort St. John oilpatch entrepreneur Rick Quigley. There are five other minor partners.

"Amongst our group, we've all lost loved ones to cancer and felt that this was a unique way for developers to give back," Barrie said.
